Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
