Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
